Working on the 9th floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, I had the chance to check out the Legacy Theater where multiple short films from Meet the Mormons show everyday. I remember the Legacy Theater being full with people and enjoyed by many when the Joseph Smith movie was played. Now, Meet the Mormons has been playing in the theater with a variety of stories to choose from and the theater is once again full with eager viewers.
How to Get There
It’s easy to get lost when trying to find the Legacy Theater. The elevators from the lobby in the Joseph Smith Memorial building do not lead to the theater. You have to go around the elevators, and either up the elevator or stairs near the FamilySearch area. If you need further direction, there are two help desks (one on the east and one on the west) inside the North end of the building. The building hosts will be more than happy to show you around.
What Time To Go
The short films are being played every half hour all day and you can see the schedule to know when to go. The only time the theater won’t be open to the public right now is Monday, January 29th — Friday, February 3rd. Other than that, it’s open 10am – 8:30pm, Monday – Saturday.
What To Expect
Since the holidays have pretty much wrapped up, and most people are back at work and school, the theater will only have a few people during every showing. It can actually be quite peaceful and make it easy to enjoy the short films and reflect. Each person in the films has such a unique and powerful story. You may also notice the beautiful music playing all around the lobby. That is probably my favorite part; to be able to sit and listen for a few minutes before leaving.
The Legacy Theater is a hidden gem here at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and I’d love to hear what you think of it by commenting below. While you’re here, you can check out the Nauvoo Cafe on the Lobby floor, or any of our other three restaurants.
