Recently one of our favorite TV shows, The Great Food Truck Race, returned for Season 6 on Food Network. While it has always been one of our favorite shows, this season is extra special because it includes Waffle Love, a food truck from Utah! What many don’t know is that in addition to Waffle Love, the Salt Lake food scene is filled with amazing food trucks offering high quality and diverse cuisine. With so many choices for tasty food, it can be hard to decide what to eat! So here to help is our definitive list of the 5 Best Food Trucks in Salt Lake City.
1. Waffle Love
It only feels right to kick off our list with Waffle Love. Started from humble beginnings in 2012 by brothers Steven, Jared and Adam, Waffle Love has quickly grown into one of the most popular food trucks in Utah, operating both a store in Provo and five food trucks that cover area from Utah Valley to Arizona. Waffle Love obviously serves waffles, but these aren’t your grandma’s waffles. These are authentic Belgian liege waffles with a flavor that can’t be beat. Whatever you get is sure to be amazing, but you just have to try the Sunshine Waffle served with lemon curd, raspberries and cream.
2. Chop City
The brainchild of two cousins, Chop City specializes in being an all pork and bacon food truck. But maybe the best thing about Chop City, besides the abundance of bacon, is that they have some of the most unique desserts around. We fully recommend you try the Bacon Brownie and fall in love at first bite.
3. Fat Kid Mac N Cheese
Claiming to be “Salt Lake’s cheesiest food truck,” Fat Kid Mac N Cheese certainly is one of the yummiest! The truck serves twists on the classic Mac N Cheese, such as adding local vegetables and special house made sauces that make you feel like you are discovering this American classic for the very first time. Another great thing about Fat Kid is the large portions, or as they say, “Fat Portions.” As for what to try, you must order the classic “State Street,” which features eight different cheeses!
4. Cupbop Korean BBQ
The unique name “Cupbop” comes from a relatively new trend in Korean style take-out cuisine. Cupbop is one of the few places in Utah that serves Korean style Barbecue and it is definitely one of the best! With different options including beef, chicken, pork and vegetarian, everyone is sure to find something! We have to say our personal favorite is the “Kko Kko Bop,” which is Korean Style BBQ Chicken served with rice and veggies.
5. Black’s Sliders
Black’s Sliders is a food truck on a mission. They promise to provide locally sourced ingredients, hormone and antibiotic free beef, and restaurant quality food at low prices. That may seem like a tall order, but oh boy, do they deliver! With a range of different “sliders” or small hamburgers that each have their pluses, we recommend you try the mouth watering “Scooter’s Southern Fried Chicken Slider” served with Romaine lettuce and ranch dressing.
Bonus: Bee’s Knees Waffles
Alright, while not technically in Salt Lake or a food truck… we just had to include Bee’s Knees Waffles in our list. This fun food stand at the Bountiful Farmers Market serves the popular Hong Kong street food, “Gai dann jai” also known as egg waffles, puffles, or bubble waffles. Soft and spongy on the inside and crispy on the outside, Bee’s Knees Waffles are perfect for picking apart and sharing or devouring entirely on your own. We recommend the Salted Caramel and Cream waffles for a tasty treat. Also make sure to come early as they sell out quickly!
Check out these food trucks and many more every Thursday at Food Truck Thursdays at The Gallivan Center! If you’re looking for a non-mobile dining experience downtown, we suggest one of the many great restaurants on Temple Square.
